10 Reasons Why You Should Use a Surrogate over Adopting

If you have struggled with infertility, you are not alone. It can seem hopeless and overwhelming to know what to do after so much disappointment. Based on my own positive experience with surrogacy, I’d recommend it to anyone struggling with infertility. The first smile of your newborn lights up your world, the pain of the past season of infertility only a shadow in the light of the new joys now happening every day. If you’re on the fence about whether you should use a surrogate, here are ten reasons you should use a surrogate.

  1. Your health and body won’t be affected. If you have health issues, you will not be affected. Your hormones won’t be affected as in the normal process of pregnancy, and your physical health will be in great shape for when baby arrives. You will need all of your energy to take care of your new little one. Not having to worry about recovering from delivery or other health struggles will give you what you need to care for a newborn.
  2. Surrogacy is a great solution to infertility. The IVF clinic will take your egg (or your donor’s egg) and your partner or donor’s sperm to create an embryo. The embryo will be transferred into the surrogate who has a higher chance of carrying to full term since she has not had any past issues with fertility; she has been screened, evaluated thoroughly and has done this before with zero to few issues. In nine months, you will have your little one in your arms, and fertility issues just a thing of the past.
  3. You’re able to have a biological child even if you have struggled with infertility. Using a surrogate is another way/option to have a biological child of your own. Once your babe is with you, how they got here will pale in comparison to the new little person developing right in front of you. And it will be your and their unique birth story- a special one that testifies to how very much this child was wanted.
  4. You get to raise a child from birth, which isn’t always the case with fostering or adopting. The fostering and adoption processes can be complicated, with delays and long periods of uncertainty.
  5. You can cultivate a special relationship with the surrogate, who can play a supportive role on your journey to becoming a parent. Many times, the surrogate becomes a friend to the family and stays in touch in the same way a former nanny might.
  6. Being part of every step of the journey. You get to be there for every ultrasound and doctor appointment, whether in person or on Facetime. You get to be there for the birth and every moment before and after. This is not always the case with fostering or adopting.
  7. The peace that comes from knowing a surrogate can successfully carry a pregnancy because they have done it before.
  8. There may even be a higher chance the embryo transfer will be more successful with a surrogate than with traditional IVF because the surrogate has already been screened.
  9. Being empowered: fostering or adopting may bring a lot of uncertainty with it, while having a surrogate is a way to be empowered in moving forward to parenthood. You have a say in every step; the legal contract protects you and outlines the specific expectations for your surrogate. This is your unique journey to becoming a parent, and you, as the parent, are still in the driver’s seat.
  10. Fewer restrictions than adoption. There are fewer restrictions than with adoption or fostering; things like age, health, home studies, are not scrutinized in the same way.
